More important than profit?

We are all familiar with capitalism; an economic model that we have all participated in as a consumer or even a business owner.

The theory is based on the principal that if you operate in your own self interest you will best benefit society by creating a profitable business.  Working within the capitalism construct our principals focus on Adam Smith’s ideals of consistent, competitive, and a profitable business structure.  While these are essential components, and we have seen great businesses come from this economic model, it has also it’s faults.  The problem is that value, as defined in capitalism, has a limited understanding of a gain.  Capitalism isolates itself to only one marketable success in which consumers can invest – financial profit.  We are missing a very tangible component, social value.  While more challenging to measure, social value is, I would argue, as important as financial gain.

Businesses have operated within the constraints of capitalism and missed the opportunity to serve the communities that actually sustain their very business.  It is time that as consumers and business owners we expect more.  Businesses should be leaders within our communities actually defining their role in society in terms of a much larger purpose than their products and services.  As a business owner, I show value and purpose as our operating principles.  I am here to change lives for the better.  Being the best in the business of buying and selling real estate is one step – changing lives for the better while being the best is where I set my bar. While clients buy, sell, and lease in Denver with Usaj Realty, we work hand in hand with Habitat for Humanity to help assist in making another family’s home a reality.  We give our clients an opportunity to invest in ownership on a community level not just as an individual or as a company.  A home for one person makes a difference in their ability to have a job, raise a family, and stay healthy.  We are all in this city together.  Affordable housing for all citizens of Denver will change the face and economy of this city.  Usaj Realty is here to change one life, one investment, and one city at a time.

As a business community we have to define a purpose that which embraces responsibility and understands that we all have a part to play in the communities in which we operate.  Be the change, your decisions matter.

Little Men get Sweet Action

We all have been wondering why the retail space along Little Raven between 15th and 16th can’t seem to stay open. Well, we have figured it out. They haven’t sold Ice Cream! The space adjacent to Ink has been remodeling for the past couple months in order to expand the coffee shop’s current operations. They have also decided to start selling ice cream… and not just any ice cream. Have you heard of Little Man Ice Cream? How about Sweet Action? Ink’s Ice Cream selection will carry flavors from both of these giants in the Denver Ice Cream World. As of today, Ink will be ready to start scooping out the deliciousness in 2 weeks time.

Everyday becomes more difficult to find a need to leave the neighborhood I live in.

Building a new Capital Hill

There has been quite a lot of activity up on Capital Hill lately. I’m not just talking about what’s going on in the Halls of Congress; there is significant building going on around the Governor’s House. Two projects in particular:

The Logan at 6th and Logan St.

The Logan is a 57 unit apartment building with 51 underground parking spaces anticipating completion this fall.

8th and Emerson Apartments

The 8th & Emerson Apartments will be a 42-unit apartment building. Rental rates will range from $900 to $1,900/month, with unit sizes ranging from 500 – 800 square feet. The project will be completed by late spring / early summer of next year.

The rental market, as I’m sure a lot of you know, is very hot right now. With the Governor back in the mansion and everyone looking for a place to live, I think these projects will easily be filled. I want to thanks the good people over at Denver Infill.

Denver’s FasTracks

I have been getting a lot of questions regarding the Light Rail system in Denver, specifically when they can ride out to the airport from Union Station. 5280 magazine did an interview this month with Pauletta Tonilas the spokeswoman for RTD’s FasTracks program, and she explained the timelines for the 6 different rail lines that are planned for Denver.

As a Resident in the Riverfront Community, I cannot help to look forward to the short walk to the Commuter Rail and hassle-free trip to DIA. Getting to the island will be so much easier.
